Below you can find a list with all the traditional and delicious greek dishes that you probably love to try while visiting Greece!

 

Starters aka meze

Dolmadakia: Vine leaves stuffed with rice, dill, parsley. Served with olive oil and lemon juice

Meze with cheese

Feta: served with olive-oil and oregano.

Bugiurndi: very regional cheese dish. In Halkidiki it is prepared in the oven with Feta, red pepper, hot pepper & tomato.

Grilled Feta: inside a foil you put the feta with olive oil, fresh tomato, (some recipes use also onion and garlic) and oregano. It is served with fresh parsley

Saganaki kefaloturi: It is dipped in flour and then fried. It is served with lemon but nowadays you can find many variations of servings either with honey or tomato jam.

Essentials – usually in addition with other food

Tzatziki: traditional spread made from yoghurt, cucumber, garlic, dill, olive-oil and salt and pepper

Melitzanosalata: Spread made from eggplant, parsley, olive oil and grilled red pepper. Can be found plain or with garlic

Fava – Spread made from split peas. Often served with fresh onion and lemon and some use also boukovo (dried chilli seeds)

Tyrokavteri – Spicy cheese-spread made from Feta and hot red peppers

Meze with seafood

Chtapodaki (octopus): grilled or boiled octopus tentacles served with olive oil, vinegar and parsley

Mydia saganaki: Mussels with  shell cooked in a pan with olive oil, green and red peppers, parsley, lemon and mustard

Shrimps Saganaki: Shrimps in olive oil prepared in a pan with fresh tomatoes, chilli pepper, Feta, parsley and some ouzo

Grilled shrimps: large shrimps, grilled and served with olive oil and lemon

Fried Kalamari:  sliced, floured and fried slices of kalamari served with fresh lemon

Grilled Kalamari: whole large squid, grilled and served with olive oil and lemon

Sardeles Plaki: Sardines prepared in the oven with onion, garlic (not always), olive oil, parsley and fresh tomatoes

Skoumpri: Smoked mackerel 

 

Salads

Greek Salad: tomatoes, cucumber, olives, peppers, onions, feta cheese, olive oil and oregano

Agourontomata – Tomato Cucumber salad: with tomatoes, cucumber, onions, parsley & olive oil

Kritama – Samphire salad: served with olive oil and lemon but some others instead of lemon use vinegar

 

Main Dishes

Gemista: Stuffed oven baked tomatoes and green and red peppers with rice, onion, parsley and the filling of the tomatoes. They can also be found with addition of minced meat

Pastitsio: it is similar to the Italian Lasagne. There are layers of thick pasta, minced meat cooked in tomato sauce and béchamel with yellow cheese

Papoutsakia: oven-baked stuffed eggplants with minced meat cooked in tomato sauce, onion, salt and pepper, olive-oil and béchamel sauce

Fricassee: casserole with lamb or goat ribs, lettuce and/or spinach, spring onions, dill, parcel and egg-lemon sauce

Soutzoukakia Smirneika (from Smirni): fried meatballs made from minced beef, spices, garlic dipped in homemade tomato sauce

Keftedakia – Grilled or fried meatballs

Spetsofai: Dish prepared in the pan with sausage, green pepper, red peppers & tomato sauce

Kleftiko: traditional oven cooked dish with lamb, peppers, potatoes and hard yellow cheese

Imam baildi: Stuffed oven-baked eggplants with onion, tomatoes, parsley, garlic, salt, pepper and feta cheese

Briam: Oven Baked Vegetables such as zucchini, potatoes, tomatoes, onions, eggplants and lots of olive oil. It is a perfect when accompanied with feta cheese and fresh baked bread

Mousaka: Layers of potatoes, eggplant, minced meat cooked in tomato sauce and béchamel

Oven Baked giant white beans: large white beans, celery, carrots, onions, salt and pepper

Meat

Souvlaki: pork/chicken-meat in small pieces on small skewer grilled and served with oregano, salt and lemon

Bifteki: grilled meatball made out of minced beef served with lemon

Pansetes: grilled belly of pork served with oregano and lemon

Seafood

Mydopilafo: Mussels in shell, rice, onions and dill. Comparable to a risotto alle vongole.

Soupies with spinach:  dish made with cuttlefish, spinach, olive oil, onion and spring onions finely chopped, fresh tomatoes, dill, salt and pepper

Soupies Stifado: a stew made out of cuttlefish, onions, olive oil, black pepper, bay leaves, garlic, red wine and fresh tomatoes

Astakomakaronada: lobster with spaghetti, onions, olive oil, tomatoes, thyme, white wine or cognac and parsley

Garidomakaronada: shrimps with spaghetti, onions, olive oil, tomatoes, basil, ouzo and parsley
